Chanyeol mans a cash register in their local convenience store. And while the job seems ungodly, Chanyeol thinks of it as an opportunity to get cash without doing a lot of intense, physical activity.
But sometimes, it gives him intense, mental activity.
Like that one time where he handed out change to an old lady who was buying sanitary napkins (Chanyeol tried his best not to laugh), but the lady insisted that the change handed out to her was five cents less than what was supposed to be given back, and Chanyeol had to explain countless times that he had handed the exact amount, even recounting the money in front of her. It wasn’t until ten minutes into their argument and loud complaints from customers waiting in line that the old lady realized that she had been looking at the ten centavo coin as a five centavo.
Chanyeol literally wanted to punch himself that day.
But today, there are no signs of that old lady, no customer complaints, just people coming and going, buying what they need to buy and swoosh, out the door they go. Some of the customers tried to strike a conversation with the boy, but Chanyeol would only laugh sheepishly and give them their change and item hurriedly. Chanyeol was never one for conversations with strangers, but the thought of it does soothe him a little. After all, he is alone for the whole day. (Except he has annoying co-workers who like to butt in into his business.)
Chanyeol hums a soft tune. Business is a little slow, but not that he minds. It gives him more time to relax and “stare weirdly at empty spaces”, as his co-worker would say.
When Chanyeol hears the bell from their front door chime, a signal that a new customer was in, he snaps out of his daze and looks towards the source of the sound. While he’s ready to say a rather monotone, “Good morning and welcome to the 24 Hour Convenience Store!”, the words become stuck in his throat, and he nearly chokes. Like, literally choke. (He swears he hears his co-workers snicker.)
A few centimeters away from him is the cutest boy he has ever laid his eyes on. The boy’s eyes wander around the store, and Chanyeol thinks of how he could squeal at how adorable he is, with his almond shaped eyes, cute, button nose, and pouty lips.
Chanyeol thinks he’s staring, and a rather impatient “Park!” from his co-worker (let’s name him Jongdae) reels him back into reality. He sees the boy make his way towards the counter, and Chanyeol gives him a sincere smile, all the while trying his best not to look like the creep Jongdae and his other co-worker (let’s call this one Minseok) dub him as.
The boy places his items on the counter, and Chanyeol thinks his heart is about to jump right out of his chest because the boy is just so freaking cute, especially when up close.
“Would that be all?” Chanyeol asks, and he earns a nod from the boy.
Chanyeol smiles again and starts swiping the items and packing them inside a bag. He’s a little suspicious on how someone as small as the boy would need so much orange juice. (Chanyeol mentally counts them, and he thinks he reaches around ten bottles of orange juice.)
“You’re so small though, why would you need so much orange juice...” Chanyeol mumbles to himself, but the boy hears this loud and clear.
He pouts a little and taps his fingers on the counter impatiently. Chanyeol notices this, and starts working at a faster pace. He reads the total, and the boy hands out cash.
Before he could even bid the boy a goodbye after giving him his change, Chanyeol sees him rush out of the convenience store, his head hung low, and one hand inside his jacket pocket.
Chanyeol thinks that the boy is a little odd, but he shrugs it off, thinking that it adds to his charm.
“So... Do you like this boy?” Chanyeol hears Jongdae slide towards the counter with a hand pressed against his chin, a smirk evident from his already devilish face.
“Excuse me?” Chanyeol scoffs, and Jongdae laughs.
“No need to be ashamed, Park. It’s normal to have the hots for a customer. “You’re human, after all,” Jongdae winks before sliding back into his work station.
Chanyeol rolls his eyes at his co-worker. He likes Jongdae, but sometimes the other could really get onto his nerves to the point that he wants to throw him out of the store. (And maybe feed him to wildlife.)
It’s not until next week that Chanyeol sees the boy again.
Although this time, he tries to be less creepy and avoids staring at the cute one. Yes, Chanyeol has officially named the boy as the cute one, earning loud laughter from his co-workers once they have found out about it. And Chanyeol thinks that it’s time to put the techniques he has learned from all those action movies to good use.
Recognizing the familiarity of the customer, Chanyeol hears Jongdae and Minseok snicker, and he swears to his life that one day, he’d really feed the duo to wildlife.
When the cute one reaches the counter, albeit his head still hung low, Chanyeol gives him a small, knowing smile, and the cute one looks up. Chanyeol doesn’t see it, but the cute one gives him a small smile in return, his lips slowly curving upwards.
Chanyeol hands the boy his bag (still full of orange juice), and when the boy accepts it, he leaves a small note on the counter, tapping his fingers on the said wood structure. Chanyeol stares at it for a while, and then stares at the boy, who only smiles sheepishly at him in return before heading out.
Chanyeol can already feel his heart doing somersaults, and he wastes no time and opens the note.
“Baekhyun.” The note reads in perfect, neat handwriting, and for a moment, Chanyeol feels insecure about his own scrawny and messy pen strokes.
Chanyeol isn’t sure if the cute one had just given him his name, but he ought to verify it once the boy comes by the store again.
Chanyeol doesn’t notice that he’s been smiling widely for the past five minutes until Minseok makes it known to him. “You look like those hyenas from The Lion King,” he commented, earning a pointed look from the latter.
“Baekhyun,” Chanyeol mumbles out loud, and he likes the way the name rolls out of his tongue. Such a beautiful name for a beautiful boy, he thinks.
Chanyeol is pretty sure he doesn’t have a crush on Baekhyun. Nope, he’s definitely sure.
(He just doesn’t want to admit it yet.)
They meet again next week, only this time, Baekhyun has the word panic written all over his face. Chanyeol sees this, and witnesses the boy run towards the juice section, stumbling and struggling a little as he hastily brings the same ten bottles of orange juice to the counter. He looks up at Chanyeol with pleading eyes, and Chanyeol starts swiping the bottles against the barcode scanner.
Chanyeol resists the urge to ask, but seeing Baekhyun so panic stricken makes his heart go a little limp. When he reads out the total, he asks, “Is... Is everything okay?”
Baekhyun merely bites his bottom lip and shakes his head, and when he shifts his gaze to Chanyeol, the latter sees tears well up in his eyes.
Chanyeol feels his heart race wildly, but not because of infatuation (but maybe a little of that), but because of how anxious he is. Seeing Baekhyun with tears in his eyes makes him want to pull the other into a hug and whisper soothing words, hoping it would calm him down.
And he does exactly that.
Chanyeol doesn’t know what comes over him, but he excuses himself from the cash register and immediately pulls Baekhyun into a hug. His arms are wrapped around the smaller man’s waist, and he knows it’s so odd to be hugging someone you’ve only seen three times, but Chanyeol doesn’t really care, because oh my god, Baekhyun is about to cry and he doesn’t want someone so beautiful to be in agony.
Baekhyun visibly stiffens, confused and nervous at the same time, but as he feels the warmth from Chanyeol’s embrace, he relaxes into his hold and leans his head against his chest, shutting his eyes and willing himself to forget all of the misfortunes he has experienced.
Baekhyun doesn’t always accept hugs from strangers, heck, he doesn’t accept hugs from anyone outside his family, but there is something different about Chanyeol, something that makes him so approachable, something that tells him that it’s okay to trust this guy, because he won’t hurt you.
Baekhyun slides his arms around the latter’s waist, seeking comfort in Chanyeol’s warm hold. He knows nothing about this stranger, apart from his name which he so happened to read from his nametag the first time he went into the convenience store.
Baekhyun bites his lower lip and buries his head on Chanyeol’s chest. He feels Chanyeol’s embrace tighten as he pulls the smaller boy closer.
“Don’t... Don’t cry. Please..?” Chanyeol lamely makes an attempt to say something comforting. He can already hear his co-workers spite him, and he envisions them being chased by deadly lions in the deep woods. But, he doesn’t care.
Chanyeol feels the smaller male smile against his chest, and the latter pulls away. He rubs his eyes with the back of his hand, and picks up the bag of orange juices on the counter. He mouths a small “Thank you” to Chanyeol, and smiles, and Chanyeol knows that this one is sincere, because Baekhyun’s eyes form small crescents, and they wrinkle a little at the sides. Chanyeol smiles back, his lips tugging upward into the biggest smile he has probably ever shown, and he feels his heart jump.
When Baekhyun is about to head out for the door, Chanyeol panics a little because oh my god, he might not see this man again, and he wants to be in constant contact with him.
So he does something that he knows will haunt him for laugh.
“Wait!” he calls out, and Baekhyun turns around looking confused. Chanyeol hears his co-workers snicker, as per usual, but right now, that’s the least of his concerns.
Chanyeol hastily looks for a pen and paper, and nearly shouts in glee when he finds them. He quickly scribbles his number onto the sheet, and hands it to Baekhyun, all the while with a sheepish smile plastered on his face.
“If... If you ever need someone to talk to,” Chanyeol doesn’t know why he’s out of breath, but he guesses that it’s because he’s speaking to Baekhyun. “You can call me. Or text me. Or something. I swear I won’t stalk you or something. Nor am I a murderer. Or an assassin.”
Baekhyun stares at the piece of paper for a while, and Chanyeol suddenly rethinks his decision. This was a bad idea, he thinks.
Just as he was about to crumple the paper (while frantically apologizing), Baekhyun takes the sheet and smiles gratefully at Chanyeol. He waves, before heading out the door.
Chanyeol isn’t sure what just happened, but everything went by with a flash, and he probably looks like an idiot right now, but goddammit, it’s Baekhyun.
Chanyeol now admits that he may have a teeny tiny crush on Baekhyun.
It’s three days later that Baekhyun decides to contact him. Chanyeol is sitting on his couch, eyes attentive to the TV screen, when he hears his phone chime.
Thinking it might just be his mother reminding him to take out the trash from his apartment again, he shrugs and picks up his phone. His eyes go wide when he realizes who had sent him a text message.
From: Unknown Number
Hi. It’s Baekhyun :) The guy from the store, if you remember.
Chanyeol hyperventilates, because oh my god, Baekhyun his crush just texted him the moment he was about to lose hope of their relationship.
Chanyeol immediately saves the number, and he ponders on what to say.
“Should I tell him that he got the wrong number?” Chanyeol mumbles to himself, but he shakes his head, because that would probably throw Baekhyun off.
In the end, he settles for the usual and conventional response.
To: Baekhyun ♥
Hi Baekhyun! Yes, I remember you :) How have you been?
Shortly after Chanyeol hit send, Baekhyun responded, saying that he has been better as opposed to the last couple of days. Chanyeol’s tempted to ask what exactly happened, but he goes against the idea, mumbling something along the words, “We’re not even close to being friends yet, why would I ask him that?”
They exchange a few more text messages. Chanyeol learns that all the orange juices Baekhyun had been purchasing were for his mother who needed them for her recovery. (Chanyeol now learns not to judge people based on what they buy.)
But that’s not the only thing Chanyeol learns about Baekhyun. He learns that the other used to be a marketing major, but dropped out of college in order to take care of his mother.
He also learns that Baekhyun loves singing, but he hasn’t really sung in a while. Chanyeol tells him that he should sing for him, but Baekhyun is quick to deny, saying that he has lost his touch and is now unable to sing as well as he used to.
A few minutes turn into hours, and when Chanyeol sees that it’s already 12 midnight, and granting that he has a shift the next day, he texts Baekhyun a good night.
Shortly after, he receives a message.
From: Baekhyun ♥
Good night, Chanyeol. Sleep well!
Chanyeol bites his lip. He thinks he might come off as selfish, but he tries it anyway.
To: Baekhyun ♥
Are you free anytime this week? I want to see you again. Hahaha!
Baekhyun doesn’t reply, and Chanyeol frowns. Maybe he had come off as selfish after all.
Chanyeol decides to get ready for bed. He goes through his usual nightly routine, which includes washing up and making sure he didn’t reek of anything, before going to bed.
Just as he’s about to fall asleep, Chanyeol wakes up to the sound of his phone. He frowns and wonders who it could be, but then remembers that he sent Baekhyun a message a couple of minutes ago.
He checks his phone and truth be told, Baekhyun replied.
From: Baekhyun ♥
I’m free tomorrow after dinner, if you don’t mind? It might be a little too late for you, though...
Chanyeol replies with a “Around what time?”, and not long after, he receives another message.
From: Baekhyun ♥
Around 8 would be good :)
Chanyeol smiles a little because the time is perfect, and so he sends Baekhyun a reply.
To: Baekhyun ♥
That’s perfect :) Let’s meet outside the convenience store?
They exchange a couple more messages regarding their meeting tomorrow, and one particular message catches Chanyeol off guard, because it’s a little odd.
From: Baekhyun ♥
If I don’t talk a lot tomorrow, please don’t think of it as a bad thing... :(
He’s not sure what Baekhyun means by that, but Chanyeol replies with an “Of course not!”
They chat for a couple more minutes before bidding each other good night.
Chanyeol falls asleep with a smile on his face, and with his heart beating rapidly.
He knows he’s not having a heart attack, because he may have just fallen a little bit more for Baekhyun.
Chanyeol is waiting for Baekhyun outside of the convenience store. He’s wearing a casual shirt covered by a denim polo, pants, and his favorite pair of shoes that have become really, really worn out.
Contrary to popular belief, Chanyeol thinks he’s actually quite the fashionista. Well, at least he doesn’t blend in with those guys who hang out at the corner of the streets, trying to look cool with their baggy clothes and cheap snapbacks.
Chanyeol looks to the right and sees Baekhyun coming. He smiles, and he thinks Baekhyun sees him, because the latter smiles back.
Thump, thump. Chanyeol feels his heart race, and it’s become a familiar feeling ever since he met Baekhyun.
Baekhyun’s wearing a hoodie that’s a little too big for him, but Chanyeol thinks it makes the smaller male even cuter.
“Hey,” Chanyeol greets, and Baekhyun smiles that same smile that sends Chanyeol’s heart into a jolt, because god, the way he smiles with his eyes forming into crescents is just the most beautiful thing Chanyeol has ever seen.
Baekhyun places a hand on Chanyeol arm, and tugs on the sleeve of his polo. Chanyeol takes this as a signal to go, and he asks Baekhyun where he wants to head down.
Baekhyun bites his bottom lip, an act that Chanyeol thinks the smaller male does when he’s in deep thought or when he’s nervous, and points to the park just right across them. Chanyeol chuckles and says a soft “Let’s go”, and he’s not sure if he’s allowed to, but he wraps an arm around Baekhyun’s shoulders and pulls him close, a little scared that the smaller would suddenly get lost. He feels Baekhyun tense a little, but he relaxes.
The walk to the park is quiet, but it’s a comfortable silence that both Chanyeol and Baekhyun embrace.
Baekhyun wasn’t kidding when he said he doesn’t talk much, but Chanyeol thinks it just adds to his charm as a small, adorable male who’s just waiting to be cuddled and hugged and loved.
Once they reach the park, Baekhyun tugs onto Chanyeol’s denim polo, and Chanyeol’s starting to think that it’s cute how he does that to get the attention of someone. Kind of like a puppy, Chanyeol thinks.
Chanyeol turns his gaze towards Baekhyun, and he sees the latter make circular motions with his hand. He tilts his head in confusion, and he swears he sees Baekhyun pout before making bigger circles, with his finger pointed to the ground.
“Oh, you want to walk around the park?” Baekhyun nods, smiling shyly and hanging his head low. He’s a little embarrassed.
Chanyeol just laughs and pulls Baekhyun even closer before going around the park. “Don’t be shy,” he says. “I’m not going to bite you or anything.”
The smaller male smiles at him, and Chanyeol’s beginning to think that the only way they could communicate properly is through smiling. Kind of weird, but I guess it works, Chanyeol mumbles to himself.
They share the silence; no words spoken, just their breaths even in the quiet evening. There aren’t a lot of people around the park, although Chanyeol spots some couples, but other than that, the place is bare.
Chanyeol feels a weight on his shoulder, and he looks to see Baekhyun leaning his head against him. He laughs a little and runs a hand through the other’s hair, ruffling it in the end. He smells a faint vanilla scent, and it makes Chanyeol want to bury his nose against the other’s hair.
“You really weren’t kidding when you said you didn’t talk much, huh?” Chanyeol asks in a joking manner, and Baekhyun shakes his head, a small smile playing on his lips.
“Not that I mind, though. I think it’s cute,” Chanyeol says. “You’re cute,” he mumbles to himself.
Baekhyun hears Chanyeol’s words loud and clear, and he feels heat rise up to his face, and he thinks he’s blushing. He buries his face against Chanyeol’s shoulder and lightly smacks the taller’s side, shaking his head against the fabric of Chanyeol’s polo.
Chanyeol laughs at Baekhyun’s rather violent reaction to the words “You’re cute”. Chanyeol really wants to hug this boy now, because damn, how much cuter could he get?
Baekhyun abruptly stops walking, and Chanyeol only realizes this when he feels the absence of Baekhyun’s warmth from the side of his body.
He turns to look at Baekhyun, who has his arms crossed and his lips formed into a pout. Chanyeol raises an eyebrow, but Baekhyun merely huffs.
It’s not until then that Chanyeol realizes that he might have said his thoughts out loud.
Chanyeol laughs awkwardly as he feels himself turn crimson. He thinks he should just admit to the other that he finds him really cute.
“But you’re really adorable, though,” Chanyeol says as he ruffles the smaller male’s hair. “Like, really adorable. Like, puppy adorable maybe?”
Baekhyun turns scarlet, and he buries his face against Chanyeol’s chest, constantly shaking his head in an attempt to deny the other’s statement. Chanyeol laughs and welcomes the boy into his arms.
The hug feels as if they have known each other for a long time. There is a sense of longing, compassion, and maybe… love?
But Chanyeol tries not to delve too much into the hug. It’s just a hug, nothing more. Besides, Baekhyun probably doesn’t see him that way. All he wants is for them to spend some time together and maybe get to know each other a little bit better.
But Chanyeol doesn’t deny that maybe, just maybe, he has fallen for Baekhyun.
He knows it’s too soon, but there’s just something about Baekhyun that compels him to pour out all of his love for the smaller male.
He knows they’ve only met three times, he knows they’ve only started talking yesterday, but love… Love is something that brings you closer to the people you barely know. Love knows no boundaries. Love connects people.
And maybe that’s what this is. Love.
And while Chanyeol needs to push back his feelings for the adorable male, he just can’t seem to help it; there’s something in him that wants to protect Baekhyun. To make him feel special. To love him.
They pull away after a while, and Baekhyun smiles bashfully, looking at anywhere but Chanyeol, and attempts to hide his already red face.
Chanyeol looks at the male in front of him. His hair hangs just above his eyelid, eyelashes fluttering just millimeters away from his full cheeks, and his lips…
Chanyeol’s gaze turns towards Baekhyun’s lips, and he takes in on how his lips are so full of life; plump and red, just waiting to be kissed.
Too soon, Chanyeol, too soon, Chanyeol repeats to himself.
But he can’t stop staring at the other male’s lips. Just how would it feel to kiss that beautiful pair of rose-red lips?
When Chanyeol finally diverts his attention to anywhere but Baekhyun’s mouth, he sees the smaller male stare at him, his eyes a little reluctant. Chanyeol searches the smaller male’s brown orbs, and he smiles.
Chanyeol realizes that he wants to be with this man so bad, and that maybe he has fallen a little too hard, considering this is their first time formally meeting each other.
But it’s worth the risk.
Chanyeol gently knocks their foreheads together, noses brushing ever so slightly. Baekhyun meets Chanyeol’s eyes, and Chanyeol thinks he sees fear and anxiety, but Baekhyun’s gaze softens as he smiles, a sign that Chanyeol interprets as “It’s okay”.
Baekhyun slowly brings his hands around Chanyeol’s neck and bites his lower lip. He looks down, a little shy of the tall male in front of him.
But Chanyeol, having had enough of Baekhyun hiding his beautiful, soft features from him, brings a hand down the other’s chin, and slowly lifts his head up until their individual pair of brown orbs meet.
Chanyeol feels nervous. He feels anxiety pulsate through his blood, because oh my god, what do I do, but his urge to just capture that perfect pair of lips overpowers how anxious he is.
Chanyeol finally leans in and closes the gap between them. He closes his eyes, and he wills himself to move his lips against Baekhyun’s own.
Baekhyun is taken aback, and he should be pushing this guy away, but it just feels so right.
Baekhyun has always denied the little voices in his head telling him that he was in love with Chanyeol because it just can’t happen, and it should never happen, but after spending the night with Chanyeol, he has learned to accept his feelings and admit to himself that yes, he is in love with the guy who mans the cash register in a nearby convenience store, but he’s also in love with the guy who shamelessly comforted him when he was about to break down in said convenience store.
He knows that the two of them together will never be possible once Chanyeol finds out what’s wrong with him, once Chanyeol finds out that he’s different, but Baekhyun takes a leap; Baekhyun takes a risk, because for once in his life, he wants someone to love him for who he is. He wants to be loved. He wants love.
Baekhyun flutters his eyes shut and responds to Chanyeol’s lips, his head tilted to an angle and his own pair moving against Chanyeol’s slightly chapped ones. His breath is a little uneven, their noses bump each other a little, and he’s nervous, but Baekhyun relaxes when he feels Chanyeol’s hand slip against his waist, caressing his side in a soothing manner.
Baekhyun runs a hand through Chanyeol’s auburn locks, and he pulls Chanyeol closer. He doesn’t want this moment to end. Baekhyun thinks their lips mold against each other so perfectly, and he doesn’t want to let go.
Chanyeol lets his lips linger for a while before pulling away slowly. His eyes search for Baekhyun’s, to see if there’s any evidence of regret, but all he sees is happiness, and a little bit of fear.
Chanyeol doesn’t know what Baekhyun’s afraid of, because every time he looks at the smaller male’s eyes, he sees a hint of fear, just often overpowered by another emotion.
“Are you afraid?” Chanyeol asks softly. He cups Baekhyun’s cheek and strokes it gently, and Baekhyun places his hand on top of his, smiling a little.
Baekhyun nods, eyes never leaving Chanyeol.
“What are you afraid of?” Chanyeol prods a little further. Baekhyun tenses a little, and he bites his lower lip, eyes diverting to everywhere else.
Chanyeol senses Baekhyun’s discomfort, and he already regrets asking the previous question. He attempts to calm the other down by saying, “Hey, hey. It’s okay. It’s okay to be afraid. I’m here, aren’t I?”
Baekhyun feels his eyes become wet, and he thinks No no no no this can’t happen right now, it’s going to ruin everything!
Baekhyun leans his head against Chanyeol’s chest, wishing that he could just tell the other what’s going on, wishing he could just tell the other how he wants to say so many things about him, wishing he could just tell Chanyeol how much he wants him, because he wants him so bad, but he can’t, he just can’t.
Baekhyun feels tears roll down his cheek, and he starts sobbing uncontrollably. He clutches Chanyeol’s shirt, furiously shaking his head against the fabric because he wants to be with Chanyeol so bad but he can’t.
Chanyeol panics, but he realizes that this isn’t the time to panic because Baekhyun is crying, and he doesn’t want a crying Baekhyun. He pulls the smaller male closer and whispers sweet nothings into his ear.
He tells Baekhyun that he doesn’t need to be afraid. He tells Baekhyun that there’s no need to cry, because he’s here. He tells Baekhyun that he’s strong.
Chanyeol rubs soothing circles against Baekhyun’s back. He plants a soft kiss on the top of his head, and he continues to comfort Baekhyun as much as he can.
Chanyeol doesn’t want the people he loves to be in agony.
Baekhyun pulls away once his sobs have died down. His cheeks are tear strained, and Chanyeol’s heart just breaks at the sight.
Baekhyun begins to move backward. Chanyeol’s confused, and he thinks of things he might have said that may have turned Baekhyun off.
This time, Chanyeol panics. Chanyeol is scared. He doesn’t want to lose Baekhyun.
Baekhyun looks at Chanyeol, eyes full of regret and sorrow, and he mouths a small “I’m sorry” before rushing out the park.
Chanyeol is left standing, dumbfounded, and with a broken heart.
Chanyeol and Baekhyun don’t contact each other for a week.
Chanyeol has already given a letter to the owner of the convenience store, saying that he has personal matters to attend to and he will be on a two week leave.
His co-workers are suspicious, but Chanyeol doesn’t really care.
After the incident at the park, Chanyeol thinks he needs a time out. He needs time to himself, time to reflect on what the hell went wrong, and why the hell Baekhyun ran away.
Chanyeol didn’t know what to feel that night, and right now it just makes him numb, thinking about it.
Chanyeol felt so hurt, dumbfounded, and confused. He knew that things could actually turn around and end negatively, but by the way Baekhyun was acting right before he ran away, Chanyeol pushed that thought to the back of his head.
He wanted to contact Baekhyun right after, but he thought that maybe Baekhyun needed some space. And so he gave him that.
He thinks he has the right to demand an explanation, but Baekhyun just seems so fragile, and he doesn’t want to hurt him.
Chanyeol bites his lip and grabs his phone. He starts typing a message addressed to Baekhyun.
He pours everything he has felt the past week into that message. Every shard of his heart left unattended on the floor, every tear he had shed, and every guilt he felt.
Once he’s finished, he hits send, not bothering to double check the message anymore.
To: Baekhyun ♥
Hey, I don’t know what happened last week, but I’m so confused, and I just want an explanation. Everyday I’ve been thinking about what went wrong, and where I went wrong, because I thought that evening was perfect, and you not liking me is the last thing on my mind because why would someone who doesn’t like me respond to the kiss like you did? It just makes me sad, Baekhyun. If you’re afraid of something, please, please tell me because I want this thing to work out, I want us to work out because I like you so much, Baekhyun. I like you, heck, I might even love you, and it hurts me seeing you run away like that. If you’re scared of something, let’s face it together. I’m willing to do anything, Baekhyun. Please, just say something. Anything. Tell me what’s wrong.
Chanyeol sighs as he receives no reply after an hour. He thinks Baekhyun is avoiding him, or maybe he came off too strong in his message, but he doesn’t really care anymore. He’s said what he’s been itching to say, and he just hopes Baekhyun gets the message.
A few more hours pass, and still no reply. Chanyeol grows a little impatient, but he sighs and decides to wait. He knows he can’t stay angry at Baekhyun.
A few minutes which feel like hours to Chanyeol pass, and Baekhyun finally, finally replies.
Chanyeol didn’t realize he’s been clutching his phone so hard until he goes to read Baekhyun’s message.
From: Baekhyun ♥
Can I see you?
Chanyeol’s a little skeptical. Why would Baekhyun want to see him so suddenly after one week of practically avoiding him?
He gives in, anyway, and texts his home address because it’s late at night. (Chanyeol realizes it’s already 10 in the evening.)
Chanyeol tosses his phone somewhere, not bothering to check if Baekhyun replies because he’s just too tired and stressed out about this whole thing.
Chanyeol falls asleep waiting for Baekhyun.
An hour later, Chanyeol wakes up to the sound of knocks on his door. He rubs his eyes and stands up groggily, stumbling to get the door because he’s really sleep deprived.
He opens the wood structure, and sees Baekhyun standing right in front of him, eyes downcast, and figure small as ever. He also has a pen and paper in hand. For what reason? Chanyeol doesn’t know.
Chanyeol mumbles a soft “Come in”, and he ushers Baekhyun into his bedroom. The smaller male follows suit, keeping a small distance between him and Chanyeol.
Chanyeol makes himself comfortable on his bed. He tells Baekhyun to do the same, but Baekhyun shakes his head and chooses to sit on the corner instead.
The two males share a few minutes in silence, but instead of a comfortable silence, Chanyeol thinks it’s more of a dead silence.
Chanyeol decides to speak up first. “I think you owe me an explanation.”
Chanyeol’s voice booms throughout the room, and Baekhyun shudders a little. He turns to face Chanyeol, and he bites his bottom lip, a habit that Chanyeol has grown fond of.
Baekhyun picks up his pen and paper and starts writing. Chanyeol’s not sure why, because Baekhyun could just tell him face to face instead of having to handwrite his explanation.
It’s when Baekhyun hands Chanyeol the paper where he has written that everything falls into place.
I’m selectively mute, Chanyeol… And I feel so sorry for not having told you earlier.
Chanyeol turns his attention to Baekhyun, whose eyes flash regret and fear.
Chanyeol realizes that this was what Baekhyun was afraid of. People pushing him away after finding out that he’s selectively mute.
Chanyeol is undeniably shocked. He thought Baekhyun was just quiet because he was incredibly shy; he didn’t expect him to actually be selectively mute.
He feels as if he’s misjudged Baekhyun; as if he hasn’t given the other male any justice.
Chanyeol signals for Baekhyun to come closer, and he can see that Baekhyun is reluctant, but he assures the other with a smile that it’s okay.
When Baekhyun is close enough, Chanyeol wraps his arms around him and pulls him close. He buries his nose against Baekhyun’s hair, pulling away slightly only to plant kisses against the other’s cheek.
“You were scared, aren’t you?” Chanyeol pulls away, his eyes never leaving Baekhyun. “You were scared that after I’d find out, I would push you away.”
Baekhyun nods at this, and he tries to turn his attention to something else, but Chanyeol’s gaze is just so strong that he doesn’t want to pull away.
Chanyeol embraces the smaller male again, placing his head against his chest and slowly rocking them. He feels Baekhyun wraps his arms around his waist, and Chanyeol just tightens his hold around him.
“You know, Baekhyun…” Chanyeol begins, his fingers threading through Baekhyun’s hair. “The first time you went in the convenience store, I thought you were the cutest person I have ever seen.”
He earns a soft smack from Baekhyun, whom he knows is smiling. Chanyeol continues. “I thought you were a little odd, I mean, considering you bought ten bottles of orange juice, I mean, who does that?” Chanyeol chuckles. “Anyway, I guess I was really smitten by you that every day, I would wait for you to come by, and every time you wouldn’t, I would always feel crestfallen. I guess you could say that I really looked forward to you coming by again.
“Then, that time where you almost cried inside the store… I couldn’t help but get this feeling that I need to comfort you, because if I don’t, who would?” Chanyeol could feel Baekhyun relax in his hold, and he just pulls the other closer. He plants a soft kiss on the crown of Baekhyun’s head. “I’m sorry if you felt like you were attacked that day, but even though we barely knew each other, I wanted to make sure you were okay, that you were happy, because seeing you sad broke my heart.”
Chanyeol feels Baekhyun shake a little, and he’s not sure if he’s laughing, but he rubs circles on his back anyway. “Then that night when we went to the park… I’ve never felt so attracted to someone, Baekhyun. I barely knew you, but I felt like I wanted to create memories with you,” Chanyeol pauses. “No, I wanted to create and share memories with you. I always told myself that I couldn’t fall in love with someone I barely knew, but love… Love is amazing. And I want to love you, Baekhyun.”
Baekhyun lifts his head from Chanyeol’s chest, and Chanyeol frowns when he sees Baekhyun’s wet cheeks.
Tears still roll down Baekhyun’s cheeks, and Chanyeol kisses them away. He places a hand on Baekhyun’s cheek and caresses it, his gaze loving and unwavering.
Baekhyun can only show the smile that’s been itching to display itself. His lips curve upwards, his eyes form half-moons and wrinkle at the sides, and he’s never felt so happy. So alive. So loved.
Chanyeol crashes his lips onto Baekhyun’s, and he’s never felt so in need of another person. He wants Baekhyun. He needs Baekhyun.
His hands position themselves at Baekhyun’s sides, and Chanyeol pulls the smaller male closer, until he’s sitting on his lap. Baekhyun throws his hands around Chanyeol’s neck and tugs down on the other male, itching for more of Chanyeol.
Chanyeol likes the taste of Baekhyun. He likes how he can taste the longing on Baekhyun’s lips, because by that he feels that the other male is really sincere. He feels it when Baekhyun moves his lips against his, he feels it when Baekhyun trails his fingers down his chest, and he feels it when Baekhyun softly bites on his lower lip.
Baekhyun is the first to pull away, his teeth softly grazing Chanyeol’s bottom lip as he does so. He smiles at him and leans on his chest, burying his face on Chanyeol’s shirt. He sighs in content as he makes himself comfortable on Chanyeol’s lap.
Chanyeol chuckles. “Let’s go to sleep. You don’t mind sleeping in for the night, right?”
Baekhyun shakes his head and smiles before detaching himself from Chanyeol. He shifts his position and lies down on the bed, patting the space next to him as a signal for Chanyeol to join him.
Chanyeol grins and takes the space beside Baekhyun. His arms find their way to Baekhyun’s waist, as if they have done it countless times, and his legs tangle themselves with Baekhyun’s. He pulls the smaller male to his chest, and leaves a soft kiss on his forehead.
“I love you, Baekhyun,” Chanyeol says, loud enough for Baekhyun to hear. “And I love you for who you are.”
Chanyeol falls asleep with Baekhyun in his arms, and he’s not sure if he’s dreaming, but he thinks he hears a soft and barely audible “I love you too, Chanyeol” that Baekhyun struggles to say just moments before he blacks out.
Love is something that brings you closer to the people you barely know. Love knows no boundaries. Love connects people.
